Fallen Rain (2011)

FALLEN RAIN (2011), a full-length Bharatanatyam work, was commissioned by the Centre for South Asian Studies (University of Toronto) in collaboration with the Festival of South Asian Literature and the Arts.

The work was inspired by courtesan performance traditions in the Kaveri delta region in Tamil Nadu and the coastal Andhra region.

FALLEN RAIN is a metaphor for love and the erotic experience.

The choreography weaves lyric poetry into a dynamic, movement-based tapestry.

The abstract dance sequences have been adapted from original solo choreography by Guru K.P. Kittappa Pillai (1913-1999), personally taught to Srividya Natarajan and Hari Krishnan.

inDANCE traces the core of our Bharatanatyam dance practices to the training we have received from our irreplaceable, revered, hereditary Isai-Velalar teachers.

Guru Kittappa’s priceless legacy continues to thrive under the stewardship of his son Guru K.P. Chandrasekaran and his gifted children, daughter-dancer Charumathi and son-percussionist Sabapathy.
