Recipes for Curry (2007)
Presented by Toronto's DanceWorks as part of its 07/08 Mainstage season, "Recipes for Curry" was an international collaboration between UK's Sampad Arts and inDANCE.
“Recipes for Curry”, explored ‘being brown’- How does one qualify, being AND performing, one’s own and others’ “brownness”?
“Recipes for Curry” is an experiment with ‘shades of brown’.
A simmering personal response to the anxieties and hopes that animate global diasporas. Discordant hybrid identities, cross-cultural mis/appropriation.
On the edge/fringe, marginal.
Sexual/gender shifts, bias/bigotry.
Owning hyphenated-realities.
Making peace with, and growing beyond the ubiquitous…
"I’d like to add, it has been 14 years since the work premiered, and we now live in a more vividly ‘woke’, social media-junky, selfie-driven, tik-tok ‘informed’ world. I feel re-visiting/re-booting “Recipes for Curry” may serve up new ‘savory’ fare for the inDANCE table…. "
