Kansas City Residency, June 1-2, 2022
An invitation to take up a weekend residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas included a talk on my book Celluloid Classicism, a lecture-demonstration, and a master class.
I worked with dancers Annie Kidwell and Maren Westgard, accompanied by renowned vocalist/Wesleyan University music professor B. Balasubrahmaniyan and percussionist Fugan Dineen, to subvert popular representations of Bharatanatyam.
We discussed and performed multiple engagements with the dynamic, complex histories, and aesthetic representations of Bharatanatyam, that continue to circulate in ever-expanding diverse global directions.
